32″ Sea Water Caisson

The 32” GRP Line had suffered from internal erosion.

NATURE OF DEFECT

The 32” GRP Line had suffered from internal erosion. This resulted in a large 140mm crack along the weld of the carbon steel side of the flange. The client requires Metalyte Pipeworks to seal the leaks live and apply a composite repair to bring the line back to its original design specification.

Solution

Metalyte Pipeworks produced a repair method using their high tensile leak sealing system and a minimum of 4 layers of Dragon-Q-STD composite system.

REPAIR METHOD

Metalyte Technicians sealed the leak using a high tensile leak sealing enclosure ensuring the client remained operational. The surface was prepared using an MBX machine to gain a surface profile to SSP.SP11. Both sides of the carbon steel and GRP flange where profiled to ensure efficient wrapping between the flange and pipe.
2 layers of LV cloth were applied as a bonding coat to the side of the repair area that is GRP prior to application of the Dragon composite. Once the LV was fully cured, the repair area was wrapped in 4 layers of Engineered Dragon Q-STD composite and cured until a minimum of 74.5 “Shore D” hardness was achieved.
