20″ Inlet Pipework to seawater

The 20” line had suffered from internal erosion. This resulted in through wall defects on the flange.

Nature of the defect

The 20” line had suffered from internal erosion. This resulted in through wall defects on the flange. The client requires a composite repair to seal the leak locations live and to bring the line back up to its full design specification.

Solution

Metalyte Pipeworks produced a repair method using a bespoke composite injectable system to seal the leaks with a minimum overwrap of 16 layers of Dragon-Q-STD composite system.

Repair method

Metalyte Pipeworks utilised a high strength composite system to arrest the leak and the surface was prepared (excluding the identified defect area) using an MBX machine to gain a surface profile to SSP.SP11. The flanges and valve body were profiled to allow a smooth composite transition. A minimum of 2 layers of Herculyte LV cloth was applied as a bonding coat to the entire repair area prior to application of the Dragon composite. Once the Herculyte LV was fully cured, the repair area was wrapped in 16 layers of Engineered Dragon-Q-STD composite and allowed to cure until a minimum of 74.5 “Shore D” hardness was achieved.
